MUSIC PROCEDURE

 

Include the name of your instrument on the Entry Form.

Participants are responsible for supplying their own music stands.

Piano accompaniment only is permitted (unless otherwise specified).

Participants must provide their own accompanist, include the accompanist’s name on the Entry Form.

 

MUSIC CATEGORIES

 

Select entries from the following list of categories:

ADDITIONAL REPERTOIRE - A selection in a category not offered in the Festival Syllabus or a second selection in a category already entered once.

 

BAROQUE - Music of the Baroque period (up to 1750) including J. S. Bach.

 

CANADIAN - A publicly accessible work of a recognized Canadian composer.

 

CLASSICAL - Music of the Classical period (circa 1750-1825): Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, etc.

 

SONATA

Grades 4 – 8…………………………………..one or two contrasting movements.

Grade 9 and over……………………………...one or two contrasting movements.

Note: 1 movement (10 minutes maximum); 2 movements (15 minutes maximum)

 

CONCERTO/CONCERTINO

Grade 4 – 8………………………………………………………one movement.

Grade 9 and over………………………………one or two contrasting movements.

Note: 1 movement (10 min maximum); 2 movements (15 minutes maximum)

 

CONCERT PROGRAM - Two or three contrasting selections. One of the selections may be one grade higher. (One mark for the overall performance).

 

FRENCH COMPOSER - Late 19th century composers: Debussy, Ravel, etc.

 

ROMANTIC - Music of the Romantic period (1825-1910)

 

SIGHT READING - The participant will be given an unfamiliar selection of music to study briefly. At the Adjudicator’s signal, the performer must play a designated section

 

.SUZUKI  - See Grade chart below to determine grade level for competitive Suzuki selections.

 

Pre-Grade One….Twinkle to Allegro, Volume 1.

Grade One…….Perpetual Motion – Minuet No.1 (Bach), including Happy Farmer & Chorus from Judas Maccabaeus.

Grade Two……Minuet No.2, Minuet No.3, Musette (Bach), Hunters’ Chorus, Long, Long Ago, Bouree in G (Handel).

Grade Three…..Gavottes by Gossec, Lully, Martini, Waltz, Two Grenadiers, Witches Dance, Minuet in G (Beethoven), Minuet (Bach)Vol.3.

Grade Four……Gavotte (Thomas, Becker); Gavotte in G minor, Gavotte in D major (Bach);Minuet (Boccherini); Humoresque.

Grade Five…….Bouree (Bach)Volume 3, Concerto No.5 in D Major, 1st mvt. (Seitz) Concerto No.2 in G major, 3rd mvt .(Seitz).

Grade Six……...Concerto No.5 in D major, 3rd mvt.(Seitz), Concerto in A minor, 1st and 2nd mvts. (Vivaldi).

 

TWENTIETH AND TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY - Music of Twentieth and Twenty-First century composers (excluding Canadian Composers).

 

UNACCOMPANIED BACH - Grade Seven and over-Sonata, Partita or Suite.

 

UNACCOMPANIED SOLO - Music written for solo instrument (not Bach).

 

DUET (ANY CATEGORY) - One partner MUST submit the Entry Form and fee. Please pay for the duet separately from other entries. Include each partner’s age, grade & instrument. Include Duet information on both participant’s Solo Entry Forms.  Split payments will not be accepted.

 

Note: Performances are to be a maximum of ten (10) minutes.

Junior…………………………………..Average age…14 & under

Intermediate……………………………Average age…17 & under

 

TRIO / CHAMBER ENSEMBLE - Two contrasting selections. 3 to 6 performers-A combination of any recognized orchestral instruments. (One performer to a part). Piano may be included. When piano is included, the piano part must be original and not an orchestral reduction.

 

Note: Performances are to be a maximum of fifteen (15) minutes.

 

ORCHESTRA - Two contrasting selections.

7 or more performers-Any combination of orchestral instruments.

Entries are to be submitted and paid for by one member. Include the name, age, grade and instrument of each member. Information must be included on each member’s Solo Entry Form.

 

Note: Performances are to be a maximum of fifteen (15) minutes.

Note that performances by Concert groups and Recital groups count as one performance.

All open categories have no time limit, but please provide accurate times.
