Refer to the General Rules and Information section at the front of this syllabus for more information.
PROCEDURE
Performers should be on site at least 15 minutes before the class starts.
A warm-up room is generally not provided. Please do not make use of any room at the venue without consulting the on-site Festival representative.
Clip the registration slips to the pages of the selections to be performed and place them at the Adjudicator’s table before the start of the class. Pick up music from the Adjudicator’s Secretary after adjudication.
Music Categories
Select entries from the following list of categories.
Music selection: See GENERAL RULES AND INFORMATION
TECHNICAL STUDIES - A selection of two (2) or three (3) contrasting studies (same grade level) as listed in a recognized Syllabus. NOTE: AT LEAST 2 studies must be performed.
QUICK STUDY - Competitors may enter only one quick study of the same grade level as their other entries. Students of the selected composer are ineligible. The selection will be available 4 days before the scheduled performance date.
CONTEMPORARY IDIOM - Conservatory Canada has published a “Contemporary Idiom” Syllabus which may be found on-line at conservatorycanada.ca. Selections are listed by levels; 1 through 8. You may choose a selection matching your level of ability from those listed. Alternatively, selections may be chosen from any other recognized syllabus, or, others of an equivalent level. You need not enter other classes to be eligible for Contemporary Idiom.
Additional Repertoire - A selection in a category not offered in the Festival Syllabus, or a second selection in a category already entered once.
Bach, J.S. - A selection composed by J. .S. Bach only.
Baroque/Early Keyboard - Music of the Baroque period (up to 1750) as represented by the music of Telemann, Scarlatti, Handel, Rameau, Couperin, etc. (excluding J.S. Bach).
Canadian - Works of recognized Canadian composers such as Archer, Dolin, Bayley, Beckwith, Bucynski, Coulthard, Ethridge, Fleming, Hansen, Kenins, Marsden, Melecci, Poole, Chatman, Reubart, Paterson (etc).
Classical - Music of the Classical period (circa 1750-1825) – Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Clementi, Dussek, Kuhlau, etc, other than a Sonatina or Sonata.
SONATINA - One or two movements.
SONATA - Competitors below the Diploma level may perform one or two movements.
Competitors at the diploma level must perform the entire Sonata.
French - Late 19th century composers: Debussy, Ravel, Roussel, Faure, Ibert, Poulenc etc.
Concert Program - Two or three contrasting selections, which may be by the same composer. One of the selections may be one grade higher. (Excludes Sonatinas, Sonatas and Concertos)
(One mark for the overall performance).
ROMANTIC - Music of the Romantic period (1825-1910), i.e. Brahms, Chopin, Grieg, Liszt,
Mendelssohn, Schubert, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, etc.
Sight Reading - The participant will be given an unfamiliar selection of music to study briefly. On the Adjudicator’s signal, the performer must play a designated section.
TwentiEth AND TWENTY-FIRST Century - Published works of recognized Twentieth century composers such as Kabalevsky, Prokofiev, Gretchaninoff, Bartok, Khatchaturian, etc. (excluding Canadian composers).
Piano Accompaniment - Performer must arrange for the soloist (vocal or instrumental). Pianist only will be adjudicated. Grade Six and over………………………Own Choice Selection.
Concerto - Orchestral part to be played on a second piano. Accompanist to be arranged by the
Performer Any grade………..……………………………One or two contrasting movements.
Duet (any repErtoire)
Use a separate Duet/Group Entry Form
One partner should submit the Entry Form along with the entire fee. Include Duet information on both participant’s Solo Forms.
Trio
Trio entries are to be submitted on a Group Entry Form and paid for by one member of
the Trio. Include the names, ages and grades of all members and the grade level of the
selection to be performed. Please include Trio information on each member’s solo entry
form.
Two Pianos (ANY REPEERTOIRE)
Grade Six and over only. Senior levels are encouraged to perform 2 contrasting selections.
The entry and payment should be submitted by only one of the pianists; include Duet information on both participant’s Solo Entry Forms.
