PROCEDURE
Ensure that the name of your instrument is on the Entry Form.
Your instrument should be tuned before entering the performance room. 30 seconds will be allowed to make any minor necessary adjustments.
Participants are responsible for supplying their own music stands.
Only piano accompaniment is permitted (unless otherwise specified).
Participants must provide their own accompanist and include the accompanist’s name on
the Entry Form.
MUSIC CATEGORIES
Select entries from the following list of categories:
ADDITIONAL REPERTOIRE
A selection in a category not offered in the Festival Syllabus or a second selection in a category already entered once.
BAROQUE
Music of the Baroque period (up to 1750).
CANADIAN
A work by a recognized Canadian composer.
CLASSICAL
Music of the Classical period (circa 1750-1825): Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, etc.
Sonata – Grades 6 – 8……………………………………………….One movement.
Grade 9 and over………..……………………………..Two contrasting movements.
CONCERTO
Grade 6 – 8………………………………………………………….One movement.
Grade 9 and over……………………………................Two contrasting movements.
CONCERT PROGRAM
Two or three contrasting selections. One of the selections may be one grade higher. (One
mark for the overall performance).
FRENCH
Music by French composers such as Busser, Chaminade, Duvernoy, Enesco, Faure, etc.
JAZZ SOLO
Some improvisation. Piano accompaniment or unaccompanied only.
ROMANTIC
Music of the Romantic period (1825-1910) ie. Schumann, Grieg, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, etc. or pieces written in a definite Romantic style by later composers.
SIGHT READING
The participant will be given an unfamiliar selection of music to study briefly. At the
Adjudicator’s signal, the performer must play a designated section.
TWENTIETH/TWENTYFIRST CENTURY
Music of Twentieth century composers (excluding Canadian) ie. Bartok, Anderson,
Satie, etc.
UNACCOMPANIED SOLO
Grade 6 and over – Music must be written to be played without accompaniment.
DUET
Use a separate DUET/GROUP ENTRY FORM.
The “principal” partner (higher grade) should submit the Entry Form and payment, including full information on both partners. Include Duet information on both participants’ Solo Entry Forms.
ENSEMBLES……………………………………………Two contrasting selections
3 to 6 performers – A combination of any recognized orchestral instruments. (One
performer to a part). Piano may be included. When piano is included, the piano part must be original and not an orchestral reduction.
Entry is to be submitted and paid for by one member. Please include the name, age, grade and
instrument of each member, as well as group information on each member’s Solo
Entry Form.
PERCUSSION
One selection, with or without piano accompaniment. Performance time 5 minutes or
less.
