PLEASE NOTE:  THE DANCE VENUE HAS BEEN MOVED FOR 2009.  ALL DANCE CLASSES WILL BE HELD AT CREEKSIDE THEATRE, 10241 BOTTOM WOOD LAKE ROAD, WINFIELD (LAKE COUNTRY)

STAGE DANCE CATEGORIES

Refer to the General Rules and Information section at the front of this syllabus for more information.

PROCEDURE

Dancers should be on site at the venue 30 minutes prior to session start time. Latecomers to classes already completed may be allowed to dance if time permits, but will receive an adjudication only (no mark).

No persons are permitted on the platform or backstage with dancers except Festival officials, teachers of performers or accompanists.

Clip the registration slips to the pages of the selections to be performed and place them at the adjudicator's table as you go to the front. Please pick up music from the Adjudicator's secretary after adjudication.

Tap shoes are to be worn during performances only. No jingle taps. No tap sounds on tape.
 
The following categories may be entered as Solo, Duo, Small or Large Group:
Jazz

Dance technique based on isolation of the body and/or contraction-release usually associated with up-tempo music. A very small degree of gymnastics, breakdance or acrobatics may be used.

Jazz Lyrical

Continuous gentle flowing technical movements, which blend smoothly from one to the next to interpret slower paced music tempos.

Jazz Music Interpretation, Solos Only - 10 years and over

Suitable music will be chosen by the Adjudicator. At the first bell, the dancer will listen to the music Side Stage, then dance to it on the second playing. (Other dancers in the class wait their turn out of hearing range).

- Practice clothes (see Provincial Technique).

Jazz Provincial Technique (Workshop) - 10 years and over

(NOTE: DIVIDED INTO AGE GROUPS)

Dancers wishing to be considered for Provincial level of competition are encouraged to participate in this class.

Jazz, Song & Dance, or Stage Student Choreography - 10 & over.

Dancer performs own choreography, choosing music and theme. Written choreography detailing steps, counts, arms, head, direction of travel and floor plan must be delivered to the Festival office, one week before Dance classes begin. Simple props allowed if integrated into the dance.

Hip Hop

Includes hip-hop, street dance, break dancing, stomp, funk, etc.

NOTE:

Titles must be included on group entries

Practice Clothes: All dancers should wear a leotard or tight fitting top and jazz pants or a unitard in a dark solid colour.

• Note: No belts, trims, jewelry, leg warmers, etc. are permitted.

TAP: Solo, Duo, Small Group or Large Group

- Tap Dancers will be judged on footwork, rhythm, style and presentation.

- No dubbing of tap sounds permitted on CD or tap.

Tap Music Interpretation - 10 years & over. - Solos only; - Suitable music will be chosen by the Adjudicator; - At the first bell, the Dancer will listen to the music Side Stage, then dance to it on the second playing. (Other dancers in the class will wait their turn out of hearing range); - Practice clothes (see Provincial Technique).

Tap Provincial Technique (Workshop) - 10 years & over

- Simple props allowed, if integrated into the dance.

OTHER

Stage Musical Theatre

- Dance suited to stage production or musical theatre;

- Must be entertaining and diversified in movement;

- Lip-synching will be permitted in the local Festival but please note that lip-synching is not permitted at the Provincial Festival.

Song and Dance

- Routine suited to stage production;

- Own voice, no voice on tape;

- 50% Dance & 50% Voice.

AWARDS Festival Awards

To be eligible, Dancers must enter a minimum of Three Solos in the Ballet and Modern Dance section or Three Solos in the Stage Dance section.

Additional Awards

To be eligible, Dancers must enter a minimum of Two Solos in the Ballet and Modern Dance section or Two Solos in the Stage Dance section.

Certificates To receive a First Place Certificate, a mark of 80% or more must be achieved. Provincial Festival Participation

Adjudicators will recommend those performers that will participate in the provincial festival. To be eligible you must enter classes as specified in the Performing Arts BC Syllabus
