CHOIR

Refer to the General Rules and Information section at the front of this syllabus for more information.

GENERAL RULES FOR CHOIRS

Provide a list of all Choir members. Ages and birth dates are required for Youth Choirs. Five percent (5%) of the choir members may exceed the specified age limit.

All selections are the choir’s choice. One of the selections may be a folk song. The total

time for a performance is limited to 15 minutes. Please indicate the accurate performance time for each selection. Selection titles must be submitted with your entry.

Piano accompaniment only is permitted, unless otherwise specified. Taped accompaniment is not permitted. Choirs must arrange for their own accompanists and include their accompanist’s name on the entry form.

All choir performances are recorded.  The Festival retains the resulting CDs or cassette tapes until the Adjudicator has made their recommendations. CDs (or cassette tapes) of Choirs recommended to the provincial level of competition will be sent to the Performing Arts BC office.

Adjudicators give consideration to…

- Stylistic interpretation, intonation, dynamics, blend, balance.

- Diction, phrasing, and whether repertoire is appropriate to the age level.

- Acapella singing is encouraged.

PROCEDURE FOR CHOIRS

Arrive 30 minutes before the class is to begin.

Should a warm-up room be required, ask at the Festival’s Venue desk. Fifteen (15) minutes before class is to begin, check with a Festival official for assigned seating.

Clip the registration slips to the pages of the selections to be performed and place them at the Adjudicator’s table at the start of your class. Pick up music from the Adjudicator’s Secretary after adjudication.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHOIRS

Two or three contrasting selections. One selection may have limited instrumental accompaniment.

Primary (boys and girls)....................... Kindergarten to Grade 3

Intermediate (boys and girls)................ Grades 4 to 6

Mixed (Boys and Girls)........................ Kindergarten to Grade 6

Girls Choir........................................... Kindergarten to Grade 6

Boys Choir.......................................... Kindergarten to Grade 6 

MIDDLE/SECONDARY SCHOOL CHOIR

Two or three contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in three or more parts.

Concert Choir..................................... Boys-only, Girls-only, or Mixed

Chamber Choir.................................... Boys-only, Girls-only, or Mixed

Acappella............................................ Boys-only, Girls-only, or Mixed

Grades, categories and divisions will determine classes.

YOUTH COMMUNITY/CHURCH CHOIRS

Junior

Two or three contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in two or more parts.

Junior A.............................................. 10 years and under

Junior B............................................... 14 years and under

Intermediate/Senior

Two or three contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in three or more parts

Intermediate/Senior.............................. 19 years and under

Mixed................................................. Junior/Intermediate/Senior combined

ADULT COMMUNITY/CHURCH CHOIR

Two or three contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in three or more parts.

Vocal Ensemble................................... 8 to 12 voices

Church Choir....................................... 25 voices or less

Community Choir................................ 25 voices or less
